Hosted by the Morupule Cycling Club (MCC) for the 4th year running, the annual calendar event this year attracted the involvement of Stanbic Bank as both a participant as well as a sponsor to the tune of P75,000.00. The cycle event was held on Sunday 27th October 2013 in Serowe.

The Morupule Annual Cycle Challenge is a charity initiative aimed at donating event proceeds to local charities, with previous beneficiaries including SOS Serowe, Palapye Kgotla, David Tshenyengo Trust and the Khama III Memorial Museum. Cyclists at the starting line at the Morupule Cycle ChallengeA substantial amount has been raised in years past for various local charities, with Stanbic Bank having served as a regular contributor to the annual event.

“This is the 4th time that Stanbic Bank has sponsored the Morupule Cycle Challenge and our relationship with MCC only grows stronger each year as we work towards encouraging a greater sense of well-being amongst Batswana, said Tasha Ferreira – Head of Corporate Banking, Stanbic Bank. “We recognize the need for a long term, sustainability and investment effort, and it is with this in mind that our sponsorship this year is not simply an isolated one. Rather, I am pleased to note that our commitment entails P75, 000.00 a year for 3 years as a testament to our dedication towards such a great initiative.”

This year’s event proved especially exciting, having been awarded status of Road Race National Championships. The status ensures that an increased field, which includes top cyclists from across the country, participated in an effort to take home the highly prized title of ‘National Champion,’ thus adding further excitement to the mix.

Noted Mr. David Kgoboko, the General Manager of Morupule Coal Mine, “The Club was formed in 2009 with the aim of improving the level of fitness and well-being of the Palapye/Serowe community while contributing to the less fortunate at the same time. Stanbic Bank have been very generous with their support in the past, both financially and with the organization and logistics on the day of the race. This year was no exception and we look forward to yet another exciting Challenge next year.”

The race included options for both long and short routes, both beginning and ending in Serowe. The short route of 58 km saw riders make their way to Khama Rhino Sanctuary before returning to Serowe whilst the longer route of approximately 100km saw cyclists go beyond Khama Rhino Sanctuary, ultimately returning once more to the finish line in Serowe.

“It has been a fantastic day of cycling, meeting members of the local community and engaging with some of our key customers and even potential customers. We’re grateful to have been given an opportunity to come on board in this way, and to have been so warmly welcomed by the Serowe community. Here’s to next year!” concluded Tasha Ferreira, Head of Corporate and Investment Banking, Stanbic Bank.
