FPC_logoFMRE Property and Casualty recently conducted an agriculture training in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire. The training touched on various aspects of agriculture insurance such as crop insurance, drought, livestock, aquaculture and forestry.

The company was invited by the re-insurance company Aveni -re, the first re-insurance private company in the French speaking countries in West and Central Africa. The company was invited on the basis of its skills set and wide experience in the Southern and East African regions. Participants of the training workshop were drawn from several countries, among them Senegal, Sudan, Tunisia, Liberia, Cameroon, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Ghana. In addition to the training there was also a survey on one of the biggest banana plantation in Cote d’Ivoire conducted in conjunction with Aveni- re.

“What came out clearly  in the workshop is that there is dire need of agriculture insurance in these countries but is limited by lack of  knowledge on how to package suitable covers and distribution channels  that are cost efficient. There is also need for government support in terms of premium subsidies since some farmers may not afford premium”, stated Ian Taonesa, FMRE Property and Casualty Managing Director.

The training has given the company an opportunity to extend its services and expertise beyond Southern Africa where it has already established a substantial stronghold within the re-insurance market.
