Stanbic Bank Botswana continues to focus upon empowering Botswana’s youth with the necessary infrastructure to help promote academic excellence, as part of the Bank’s focus on nationwide financial literacy. This year, the bank made a P60, 000 donation towards the 6th Annual Excellence Awards, hosted by the Botswana Examinations Council (BEC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MoESD).

The Excellence Awards are a national project that aims to encourage strong performance during national examinations. Officiated this year by President Ian Khama; the Awards took place on the 16th July 2015. Also in attendance were officials from MoESD, including Minister of Education and Skills Development Unity Dow and her two Assistant Ministers Moiseraele Goya and Kgotla Autlwetse.

Head of Marketing at the bank, Duduetsang Chappelle- Molloy, “I cannot commend the Botswana Examinations Council and the Ministry enough for such a wonderful platform as this. It is abundantly clear what incredibly bright young minds we have within our country, and the potential for further development and growth is profound. It is vital that we work together, as public as well as private organisations, to celebrate such talent and achievements”.

The donation went towards purchase of 9 state of the art iPads and a Mac Air Book for the top 10 students in the 2014 sitting of the Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education Examinations (BGCSE). Of the 10 best students, 9 received Ipads, whilst the overall best student in the country walked away with a Mac Air Book. The bank’s objective in making a donation of this nature is to support students with tools and infrastructure to help them excel in their studies.

The BGCSE top achievers include; Gosenyang Dimpho Mme, Maikano Nicole Nonofo, Willie Thato Lobopo Shato, Malose Gorata Bridget, Musekiwa Caleb, Motamma Dikano, Kgautlhe Daniel, Modie Galefelele Gomotsegang, Clement Thapelo and Makwati Keneilwe Maduo.

The awards night encompassed recognition of other national top achievers such as the top ten students in the 2014 sitting of the Junior Certificate Examination (JCE), Primary School Leaving Examinations (PSLE), best school & best Parents Teachers Association as well as six special needs awards (one visually impaired and the other hearing impaired at each of the three levels; BGCSE, JCE and PSLE), all of which were sponsored by the private sector.

“We at Stanbic Bank have a strong focus upon driving academic inclusion and financial literacy. In this crop of exceptional minds may well be a future Chief Executive of Stanbic Bank, as well as captains of industry, leaders, and indeed provocateurs of social change. Let us celebrate and nurture this, and indeed make greater efforts towards ensuring that we see even stronger, more widespread excellence in academics from our children. We must move our children forward in order to empower them to advance us in the future,” said Chappelle-Molloy.

The BEC annual Excellence Awards in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Skills Development were also attended by members of the Diplomatic Community, representatives of international organisations based in Botswana as well as teachers and parents of the Awards recipients.
