In the efforts to save rhinos from poaching World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) said it has seen a host of novel approaches, ranging from the use of drones to poisoning the horns. Now safari company Great Plains Conservation has launched an innovative crowd-funding campaign to fund the translocation of rhinos from South Africa’s Kruger Park to the safer plains of Botswana.

WTTC said to achieve this they have sought the help of Trevolta, a crowdfunding app set up for people who want to travel but can’t afford it. The costs of moving a single rhino is around US$45,000, and the project has already raised over US$181,000.

Donations of all different volumes are encouraged, and the project is offering a selection of clever incentives. Anyone donating just one dollar is given the instructions on how to make their own origami rhinoceros.

“Yet should a wealthy donor provide upwards of US$100,000 they will not only get a stay in one of Great Plains camps, they also get the chance to name one of the rhinos in their honour.”
