On Wednesday 14th May 2014 Botswana Accountancy College organized a two day employability workshop for students in the School of Business and Leisure. The objective of the employability workshop was to sensitize students on key skills demanded by the labour market and the entrepreneurial land scape to enable them to take on any challenges they may meet on these fronts.
Said Academic Director of BAC, Dr. Byron Brown, “This workshop is designed to guide students into the labour market by introducing them to industry leaders from the business community. It is an opportunity for them to network with these industry captains in preparation for the upcoming challenges as employable adults in the workforce”.
The workshop was aimed at the class of 2014, BA (Hons) Accounting & Finance final students. The seminar focused on four key pillars; Transferable skills, Entrepreneurship skills, Technical skills and Work Ethics. It provided a forum engaging graduates in the exploration of job opportunities, job nature, scope and relevant requirements. Now in its second year, the theme for this year’s seminar was ‘Integrity and Assertiveness’, with emphasis on demonstrating sound work ethic at all times, and assertiveness as an important leadership skill that will lead to success in the workplace.
Graduates were urged to combine transversal, multidisciplinary and innovation skills and competences as well as up-to-date subject-specific knowledge which would better prepare them for their contribution to the wider needs of society and the labour market. Botswana Insurance Fund Management (BIFM), KPMG, Price Water House Coopers (PWC), Botswana Institute of Chartered Accountants (BICA), First National Bank Botswana (FNBB) and Local Enterprise Authority (LEA) were among some of the organisations that facilitated the workshop by sharing their experiences and expectations of graduates with the students.
“Upon completion of their programme, it is very few students who are able to immediately adapt to the pressures of the corporate world. With this seminar, we hope to instil confidence along with a structured guide to paving their way to successful careers.” Concluded Dr. Brown
