Botswana Insurance Company and The Dignity Foundation Trust have signed a Corporate Social Responsibility partnership agreement in support of the Foundation’s drive which is to empower and improve the lives of underprivileged young girls in Botswana. The Dignity Foundation Trust is mandated to provide, amongst other things, sanitary pads, counselling, and cancer preventative medical exams by providing them with sanitary pads.

The Dignity Foundation Trust is a Foundation established by a few very passionate Batswana women who would like to empower and improve the lives of the underprivileged girl-child and young woman, in recognising the needs and disadvantages experienced by them in multifaceted ways.

The seed that inspired the Dignity Foundation, was the humiliation and indignity experienced when a girl stains her clothes or misses school just because she does not have a sanitary pad to use. The Foundation allows people to celebrate womanhood by bringing awareness of what it is to be a woman in all her phenomenal-ness. It restores dignity. BIC-ad-120X600pxTALL

BIC pledges to assist the Foundation in monetary support for the foundation’s social media and website maintenance which is key for engagement and raising awareness about the Foundation’s objectives. BIC’s corporate social responsibility emphasises the need for its employees to play an integral part by contributing expertise and skills, as well as their time to assist Dignity Foundation in achieving its mandate. BIC staff will also donate sanitary pads every month in honour of the partnership agreement.

BIC Managing Director, Johann Claasen highlighted that looking after people in need is key. “It is a wonderful project for BIC to be involved in, we are helping provide self worth and care to the less fortunate and in the process we are also investing in these girls future because them having sanitary pads will ensure that they do not miss a whole week of school,” declared Johann.

According to Mokgadi Nteta, the Chairman of the Foundation “it is everyone’s responsibility to care for other human beings and for people to be aware of what is happening in their environment”. Mokgadi stated that as a society, people can not ignore the plight of others and somehow wish they will go away, it is imperative to support and look after each other. She further pointed out that this partnership is a starting point for the Foundation to get the message out there and also seek support from other private sector players and the community at large.

At BIC we are very humbled to work with The Dignity Foundation Trust to improve the lives of the vulnerable and disadvantaged girl-child and we believe the partnership will enhance the Foundation’s goal. Corporate Social Responsibility is a critical element for BIC and considered a high priority area in contributing to Botswana’s social development. This partnership reflects BIC’s desire to see partner projects evolve and gain skills and tools necessary to be self sustainable in the long run.
