This spring, your things-to-do list should include the inaugural Joburg Shopping Festival, a fabulous world-class experience.
The Joburg Shopping Festival is a partnership between Visa and Gauteng Tourism, and takes place at two diverse shopping hubs – Sandton City and the Oriental Plaza – from 25 to 28 September 2014. It is hoped that the festival, which is inspired by the world-famous Dubai Shopping Festival, will catch on and become an annual event. Participating retailers, restaurants and travel and leisure providers will bring you a weekend of great specials and deals, consumer discounts and other promotional offers.
‘One of the reasons why Gauteng is such an amazing shopping destination is because this province has one of the best climates in the world. Gauteng is a prime destination all year round,’ says the Joburg Shopping Festival Facebook page. ‘Come summer or winter, the province generally experiences sunny, windless days that are the perfect springboard for showcasing the pulse of South Africa’s economic hub.’
Sandton City boasts 300 local and international retailers. It’s located in northern Johannesburg and easily accessible from the Sandton Gautrain station, highways and main roads within the Sandton CBD. The Oriental Plaza, right in the heart of Johannesburg’s CBD, has attracted shoppers for more than 30 years.
In close proximity to the Oriental Plaza are a number of theatres, restaurants and iconic destinations such as the Market Theatre, Mary Fitzgerald Square, Gandhi Square and the Nelson Mandela Bridge. For those shoppers who’d like a little musical entertainment as well, the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival is also happening at the Sandton Convention Centre from 25 to 27 September.
