“Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice. Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. Sometimes it falls on a generation to be great. YOU can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom.” – Nelson Mandela.

The 18th of July is one day that all South Africans or even citizens of other countries come together in celebrating one special man – Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. The tradition is that those who wish to commemorate him donate 67 minutes of their time to a good cause on the day. The questions stands, “what will you be doing on that special day?”

In 2009, The United Nations joined the Mandela Foundation in asking people around the world to Celebrate Nelson Mandela’s birthday by spending 67 minutes in making a change to the community on 18th July each year. This has become a culture in our society, where South Africans contribute 67 minutes to a worthy cause.

The Vuma Reputation Management team, on Friday, 17 July visited the Foodbank for our 67 minutes for Nelson Mandela Day. We helped with packing grocery hampers which will be donated to people in need across Johannesburg.

“We always take this opportunity to make a difference to other fellow South Africans who are less fortunate. As part of our strategy in skills upliftment and giving back to the community, we blocked off company time in our calendars to ensure that we could play a part in this important initiative. We would like to challenge the rest of South Africa to make each day a Mandela day, says Janine Hills, CEO and founder of Vuma Reputation Management.

“A fulfilling morning as we worked together to make a difference. There was excellent team work and it was amazing to see different organisations collaborating for one goal.

It felt good knowing that we were doing something that will make a positive difference in someone else’s life, says Roshnee Pillay Senior Account Director, Vuma Reputation Management team member.

FoodBank South Africa is a registered non-profit organization, established in 2009 to provide a co-ordinated central logistical infrastructure that collects edible food from manufacturers and retailers, and ensures that this food is redistributed to help feed thousands of hungry people every day.
