Mema Tiango RECEIVES CHEQUE FROM STANBIC BANK CFO
Stanbic Bank Botswana on Monday 30th March 2015 recognised and rewarded local athletes who excelled in the 21.1km leg of this year’s Diacore Gaborone Marathon (DGM). The initiative follows the renewed 3 year P350, 000 sponsorship contract which gives Stanbic Bank naming rights to the 21.1km.
The top Motswana male athlete, in the 21.1km race, Mr. Godiraone Nthompe, came in 1:08:43. His female counterpart, Ms. Mema Tiango, completed her race in 1:22:14. Each received P5, 000.00 cash prizes for their efforts from Stanbic Bank Botswana.
“As a bank, we take special interest in local sports development and in nurturing talent in the sporting fraternity in Botswana. The myriad of benefits of such platforms, be it from increasing Botswana’s competitiveness on the global stage to health rewards of sport in an individual’s life, cannot be overemphasised. We want to ensure Botswana’s athletics talent is truly mined and grown to its full potential. We hope this gesture goes some way towards helping us achieve the goal of greater access to and development of local sporting talent,” said Ms Dube, Client Coverage Relationship Manager of Stanbic Bank.

“I am grateful for Stanbic Bank’s prize, as it will help me enhance my skill and I will also use the money to buy some sporting apparel. As a citizen, I feel very happy for the extra recognition and special attention I am receiving from the bank and the public. I endeavour to keep performing at my level best and inspiring the nation,” says Ms. Mema Tiango.
This year’s Marathon saw record participation, with a total of 6,000 participants having registered, including about 200 members of Stanbic Bank staff. The latter earned Stanbic Bank the accolade for Most Participants for the second consecutive year.
“We are thrilled to be able to support this annual athletics and charity platform yet again, with what is a truly humbling relationship with the Diacore Gaborone Marathon. This has been the third consecutive year in which we have sponsored the event, each year increasing our efforts and our contributions and yet with a desire to constantly do more,” concluded Ms. Omphemetse Dube.
